AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, monogram above prow to left. Mektipini 418 (same obverse die). Price 2472. Extremely rare. Light doubling and with a scratch on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.


The Alexanders struck in the Carian city of Knidos are among the great rarities in the entire series. They were struck in circa 205-190 BC and are perhaps connected to the Cretan War of 205-200 and the conquests of Philip V of Macedon in Caria.
